Summary
This collection of essays was the first of its kind — before Montaigne, the essay did not exist. He used this format to explore many topics across the subject of living.
Despite their age, they are surprisingly relevant and true to our experience today. Some of the most popular include: "Of the Education of Children," "Of Repentance," "Of Idleness," "Of Friendship," "Of Solitude"
About the Author
After working as a lawyer, Montaigne started writing his essay project in his retirement. Over 10 years in near isolation, he completed the first edition of the works. Over the subsequent years, he continued to edit and revise his works, which can still be seen in the final version of his essays (sections are cited by which revision they were written).
